The Wedding That Never Began

Chapter 09 - The Wedding That Never Began

The following morning, white roses still covered the estate.

Guests received cancellation notices without explanation. Some arrived anyway, hoping proximity might become information. Reporters waited beyond the gates. Vendors demanded payment.

Sebastian instructed the independent council to pay every worker in full.

It was his first decision after losing control, and because the trust was frozen, he had to request approval rather than command it.

The council approved.

The ballroom remained empty.

Madison requested a final conversation in the glass corridor. Her attorney waited nearby.

She wore ordinary black clothing instead of the wedding gown.

“I did love you,” she said.

Sebastian believed her.

That made the conversation worse.

She explained that Reed Development faced collapse. Her father told her thousands of employees would lose jobs unless the Hale medical land became collateral. Conrad said Eleanor was already declining and Elena planned to sell the company after removing Sebastian.

Every lie contained a fragment of truth.

Eleanor had been tired.

Elena had ordered audits.

The Reed company employed real families.

Sebastian felt underestimated by his father’s will.

Madison used none of those facts to ask for honesty.

She used them to justify forgery.

“You could have told me your family was failing,” Sebastian said.

“You would have asked the trustees.”

“Yes.”

“They would have said no.”

“Then no was the answer.”

Madison looked toward the roses.

“I thought marriage meant we decided together.”

“It does not mean we steal decisions from everyone else.”

She began crying.

Sebastian wanted to hold her. He remembered the fundraiser, the jokes, the evenings when she listened to his grief. He also remembered her voice in the car saying he would sign anything.

He stepped back.

Love could remain real and still become unsafe.

Madison left through the same doors Elena had used.

This time, Sebastian did not point.
