Eleanor Comes Home

Chapter 12 - Eleanor Comes Home

Eleanor returned to the mansion after two weeks of treatment.

She walked through the front doors using a cane. Her mind was clear, though shame made her steps feel heavier than age.

Sebastian met her in the foyer.

They embraced carefully.

Eleanor had helped create his distrust of Elena. After Jonathan married, she repeatedly called Elena a gold digger and warned Sebastian that affection could be a financial strategy.

Those warnings made Madison’s accusations easy to believe.

“I taught you to look for greed in the woman without our name,” Eleanor said. “I did not teach you to look for it inside our family.”

Sebastian sat beside her.

“You were drugged.”

“After I spent years helping Conrad isolate Elena.”

Both truths remained.

Eleanor asked Elena to visit.

Elena agreed to meet in the glass corridor with Mara present. The old woman apologized without asking for immediate forgiveness.

“I treated your marriage as theft,” she said. “Then I nearly helped thieves take everything Jonathan protected.”

Elena listened.

“You also made this house difficult for me before Jonathan died.”

“I know.”

“I will not pretend the last weeks created the entire wound.”

Eleanor nodded.

That answer hurt, but it was honest.

She offered to surrender her trust vote permanently.

Elena declined to decide.

“The council and your independent attorney will discuss whether that serves the trust. Guilt is not governance.”

Eleanor almost smiled.

Jonathan used the same phrase.

Before Elena left, Eleanor asked whether she would ever live at the mansion again.

“I don’t know.”

The old woman accepted uncertainty.

It was a form of respect the Hale family was only beginning to learn.
