Eleanor’s Missing Week

Chapter 06 - Eleanor’s Missing Week
Eleanor remembered almost nothing about the week she signed the medical petition.
She remembered Conrad arriving with flowers.
She remembered Madison bringing tea.
She remembered waking in a private residence with her wedding ring missing because nurses said jewelry confused her.
The rest appeared in fragments.
A doctor asking whether she knew the year.
Conrad correcting her before she answered.
A document placed beneath her hand.
Madison saying Sebastian needed her cooperation.
A camera flash.
The independent physician, Dr. Lena Brooks, reviewed Eleanor’s records. The sedative dosage could cause disorientation, weakness, and memory gaps in a healthy adult.
Eleanor did not have progressive dementia.
Her symptoms had been manufactured.
The private residence director claimed Conrad held valid medical authority. The authority document carried Eleanor’s signature stamp and a witness line signed by Madison.
Madison stared at it.
“I was told it approved temporary care.”
“You did not read it?” Elena asked.
“No.”
Sebastian laughed bitterly.
It was the same defense he had been preparing for himself.
Conrad gave them summaries.
Madison gave Sebastian reassurance.
Each person avoided the complete page because the lie rewarded avoidance.
Eleanor asked to return to the mansion that evening.
Elena refused until the building had been secured and every medication replaced through an independent pharmacy. Eleanor bristled at being told no, then recognized the difference.
Elena was not declaring her incapable.
She was explaining a specific risk and asking for a safe plan.
Eleanor agreed to stay in the hospital overnight.
Before leaving, she took Elena’s hand.
“I believed you married Jonathan for the house.”
Elena answered quietly.
“I know.”
“I helped Sebastian distrust you.”
“I know that too.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
An apology did not erase years of contempt. But truth began where defensiveness ended.
Eleanor looked toward Madison.
The bride’s white gown reflected in the black car.
“Cancel the wedding,” she told Sebastian.
He did not answer.

He still loved Madison.
That was what made the decision difficult.
