The Reed Ledger

Chapter 11 - The Reed Ledger
Reed Development’s collapse was not caused by one bad project.
The company had hidden debt for six years. Madison’s father, Oliver Reed, borrowed against future buildings that never received permits. He used new investor money to cover old obligations and described the cycle as temporary liquidity management.
Conrad knew.
The Hale medical campus was supposed to rescue them.
Investigators recovered a ledger showing payments to Conrad, Eleanor’s physician, the private residence director, and a security contractor assigned to monitor Elena.
One payment had Sebastian’s name beside it.
He stared at the entry.
Conrad had created a consulting company using Sebastian’s initials, making it appear the heir approved the scheme. Funds moved through it before reaching the physician.
If the fraud had succeeded, Sebastian would have become the visible criminal once Madison’s family escaped.
She had known about the company.
She claimed Conrad told her it was a technical structure approved by Sebastian.
Again, she had chosen not to verify the answer that benefited her.
Oliver Reed was arrested at his office.
He told reporters the Hale family destroyed an honest company to protect an ungrateful widow. Former employees then released internal messages showing he planned mass layoffs even if the land sale succeeded.
The thousands of jobs Madison said she was saving had already been marked for elimination.
Sebastian asked the independent council to create emergency assistance for innocent Reed employees. The council approved a limited fund financed by recovered assets, not Hale clinic money.
Elena supported the proposal but refused to chair it.
She wanted every remedy separated from family image management.

The difference mattered.
For decades, wealthy families had donated publicly after causing harm privately. This time, aid would not purchase a cleaner story.
