Claire Visits the Workshop

Chapter 18 - Claire Visits the Workshop
Claire visited Gabriel’s Maine workshop during winter.
He wore old coveralls and repaired the fuel system of a rescue boat engine.
“You really do this for fun?” she asked.
“Machines admit when a part fails.”
“People do not?”
“People hire consultants.”
She laughed.
Gabriel handed her a wrench.
She held it incorrectly.
He asked permission before correcting her grip.
The small question moved her more than the expensive security system had.
For years, Claire believed independence meant never needing her father.
Now she understood that receiving help did not erase autonomy when the helper respected the answer no.
She began calling him for advice.
Sometimes she followed it.
Sometimes she did not.

Gabriel learned not to interpret disagreement as danger.
Their relationship became less dramatic and more honest.
