The Visit

Chapter 19 - The Visit
Seven years after sentencing, Claire visited Julian once.
He worked in the prison library and had completed several accountability programs.
He apologized without mentioning Vivienne, Helix, debt, or Gabriel.
“I knew you were afraid,” he said. “I used it because I thought your signature mattered more than your consent.”
Claire accepted the sentence as accurate.
He asked whether she forgave him.
“I no longer organize my life around anger toward you.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
He asked about the company.
Claire told him Grace still led it.
He asked whether the world finally admitted he was a real founder.
“You were always a real founder,” Claire said. “That was never the issue.”
Julian looked surprised.
“Your work had value. You believed that value entitled you to control everyone connected to it.”
He lowered his eyes.
Claire left after twenty-five minutes.
