Vivienne’s Number

Chapter 04 - Vivienne’s Number

Investigators asked why Vivienne changed two hundred to two hundred and twenty.

The answer was on her tablet.

She had created a private scoring sheet called ACCOUNTABILITY SEQUENCE.

Every time Claire contradicted Julian in front of staff, delayed a signature, contacted an independent director, or refused medication, Vivienne added a number.

The “punishment” was intended to remain mostly off camera. The staged video would show only Claire accepting the count, apologizing, and signing voluntarily.

Vivienne understood disbelief as a weapon.

If Claire later described an absurdly extreme demand, people might assume she exaggerated everything.

The number was not a loss of temper.

It was reputation engineering.

Hidden camera angles had been marked on the penthouse floor. A lamp had been moved to cast Claire’s face in harsh shadow. Vivienne’s chair remained softly lit so she appeared calm and credible. Julian stood in the center, framed as a weary husband managing a crisis.

The final clip would begin after the threats.

It would end before Claire left.

A doctor waited two floors below with a prewritten incapacity report.

A public-relations team had already drafted a statement announcing Claire’s “temporary medical leave.”

Naomi reviewed the timestamp.

“The story was prepared before the event.”

Claire looked at Vivienne.

“You did not come here to watch.”

“No,” Vivienne said. “I came to finish what you kept delaying.”

Julian turned toward his mistress.

“You told me the recording was for legal protection.”

“It was.”

“For us.”

Vivienne did not answer.

The tablet contained another folder Julian had never seen.

POST-CLOSING LEADERSHIP.

In that version of the future, Vivienne became executive chair.

Julian’s authority ended six months after Claire’s removal.

The mistress had not been helping him steal an empire.

She had been using him as the temporary face of the theft.
