Why Claire Did Not Call Earlier

Chapter 06 - Why Claire Did Not Call Earlier

Gabriel had given Claire the emergency ring before her wedding.

She almost returned it.

“I am marrying a man, not entering a hostage negotiation,” she told him.

Gabriel apologized for making fear feel inevitable. He explained the device once and promised never to monitor it unless she activated the signal.

For six years, he kept that promise.

Claire considered calling after Julian broke a bedroom door during an argument.

She did not.

He apologized and replaced the door.

She considered calling after he took her phone for an entire night because she contacted an independent auditor.

She did not.

He called it panic, not control.

She considered calling after Vivienne returned as a “business consultant” and began attending family dinners.

She did not.

Julian said refusing the arrangement would make investors question Claire’s professionalism.

Each incident arrived with an explanation slightly easier to accept than the truth.

Claire also feared proving Julian right about her father. Julian often said Gabriel would take over the company if given an excuse. Claire wanted independence so badly that asking for help felt like surrendering it.

Inside the new apartment she chose after leaving the penthouse, Gabriel said, “I should have made the difference clearer.”

“What difference?”

“Help should increase your choices. Control reduces them.”

Claire looked at the ring.

“I waited too long.”

“You called when you could.”

“That sounds like comfort.”

“It is also accurate.”

Gabriel did not ask her to forgive herself immediately.

He did not turn her survival into a lesson for him.

He waited while she decided what came next.
