The Penthouse Was Not Quiet

Chapter 01 - The Penthouse Was Not Quiet
Nathan Brooks returned from Singapore forty-eight hours early.
The penthouse was supposed to be empty except for his wife and ten-year-old daughter. Celeste had told him they were both asleep and that he should go directly to the charity gala after landing.
Instead, Nathan brought his suitcase home.
The elevator opened into silence.
Then he heard a child crying.
He crossed the dark living room and stopped beneath the city lights pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
His daughter, Ava, was kneeling on the cream rug in her blue school uniform.
Pieces of a shattered wall mirror surrounded her.
A dark stain marked the back of her shirt where the fabric had brushed against broken glass. Her hands were held behind her, not tied, but pressed together as though she had been ordered not to move.
Celeste stood behind her in an ivory satin dress.
A black riding crop from the penthouse’s antique display hung at her side.
“Celeste.”
Nathan’s voice filled the room.
She spun around.
For one second, fury remained on her face.
Then she smiled.
“You’re home.”
Nathan dropped his travel bag.
“What happened to Ava?”
Celeste lowered the crop and stepped away.
“She broke the mirror during another tantrum. I was trying to keep her still until security arrived.”
Ava looked up.
“Dad—”
Celeste interrupted.
“She has been lying for weeks.”
Nathan crossed the room carefully, avoiding the glass. He removed his tuxedo jacket and placed it over Ava’s shoulders.
“Can you stand?”
“My back hurts.”
He lifted her only after she nodded.
Celeste began explaining how difficult Ava had become since Nathan announced the sale of Brooks Learning Network.
Then the penthouse windows emitted a soft chime.
A blue light appeared along the base of the smart glass.
BUILDING SAFETY EVENT PRESERVED.
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
The residential tower automatically recorded acoustic disturbances involving shattered glass, fire alarms, or emergency cries. The files uploaded to an independent safety server beyond the apartment owner’s control.
Nathan opened the alert on his phone.
Celeste’s voice played through the room.
“Tell the camera you found the documents yourself.”
Ava answered, “They were inside Mom’s mirror.”
“Then sign the statement.”
“No.”
The recording captured the mirror breaking.
It captured Celeste ordering Ava onto the rug.
Then another sentence followed.
“If your father completes the Singapore sale tomorrow, your mother’s scholarship trust becomes ours.”
Nathan looked at the woman he had married six months earlier.

Celeste looked toward the elevator.
The doors had already locked in emergency mode.
