Rosa’s Testimony to the Staff

Chapter 16 - Rosa’s Testimony to the Staff

The tower hired Rosa to train residential employees after the penthouse became a safety center.

She stood in the room where Ava once knelt and explained the choices staff faced.

A closed door.

A powerful employer.

A child’s changed behavior.

A dismissal summary carrying the owner’s digital approval.

Rosa did not present herself as fearless.

She admitted delaying her report.

She feared losing her apartment, insurance, and immigration attorney provided through work.

“People ask why staff do not simply call the police,” she said. “The person controlling the home may also control the phone, schedule, paycheck, reference, and story.”

The center created an independent reporting line for domestic workers.

Housing and healthcare could not be canceled during an active safety complaint.

The smart-glass system also changed.

Residents received privacy, but emergency recordings involving shattered glass or direct distress required independent review before deletion.

A child advocate helped write the policy.

Technology did not become the judge.

It preserved a narrow window until people with no financial connection could assess what happened.

Ava visited once after closing hours.

She stood where the mirror had been.

A plain wall remained.

“Good,” she said.

The room did not need a replica of the object that broke.

It needed better doors out.
