The Key Inside the School Tie

Chapter 02 - The Key Inside the School Tie
Paramedics examined Ava in the guest bedroom.
The marks on her back were painful but superficial. No deep injury required treatment. Dr. Maya Chen cleaned the small abrasions and asked every adult to leave while she spoke privately with the child.
Nathan waited in the hall.
He wanted to break something.
Instead, he called Detective Lena Ortiz and the building’s independent safety director.
Celeste called the evening a misunderstanding.
She claimed the black object was decorative and that Ava had become frightened after breaking the mirror.
The audio said otherwise.
Ortiz arrived with a child advocate and preserved the smart-glass file.
Ava later asked to speak with Nathan.
She sat beneath a blanket, still wearing her uniform shirt. Her navy tie lay folded beside her.
“Mom put something in this,” she said.
Ava’s biological mother, Amelia Brooks, had died from cancer three years earlier.
Nathan touched the tie.
“Your mother?”
Ava nodded.
“Before the hospital, she showed me how to open the seam.”
Inside the narrow back lining was a blue plastic key no larger than a thumbnail.
A crescent-shaped mark was printed on one side.
Amelia had designed the first student-safety platform used by Brooks Learning Network. Nathan handled investments and expansion. Amelia controlled scholarship records and child-data protections.
After her death, the network’s charitable shares entered a trust for Ava.
Nathan believed the trust would remain inactive until Ava turned eighteen.
Celeste’s recorded words suggested otherwise.
Ava explained that she found the key two weeks earlier while repairing the tie for a school ceremony.
She showed it to Celeste.
Celeste became terrified.
“She said Mom hid stolen company files and that you would lose everything if I opened them.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I called your office.”
Nathan remembered no call.
His Singapore assistant had sent a message saying Ava wanted to complain about homework. Celeste had access to the family calendar and screening service.
Ava’s calls had been redirected.
The blue key matched a security port in the frame of Amelia’s antique mirror.
When Ava inserted it, a hidden panel opened.
Celeste entered before she could remove the documents.

The mirror did not break because Ava lost control.
Celeste broke it while trying to tear the archive from the frame.
