The Hallway He Tried to Destroy

Chapter 01 - The Hallway He Tried to Destroy

Sophie Vale watched her father swing the iron fireplace poker into the hallway wall.

The first blow cracked the cream paneling.

The second shattered a gold-framed mirror.

By the third, white plaster covered Daniel Vale’s black suit and the polished marble floor of Hawthorne House.

“Where did she put it?” he shouted.

No one answered.

Sophie stood at the far end of the corridor in her navy school dress, one hand trapped inside the terrified grip of Marta Ruiz, the family housekeeper. The eight-year-old could feel Marta trembling.

Daniel struck another panel.

A brass wall sconce fell and broke beside him.

On the floor between them lay Sophie’s mother.

Claire Vale wore the beige dress she had chosen for the foundation dinner. Her dark hair spread across the marble. One arm rested unnaturally beside her body, and a thin gold chain had snapped near her neck.

“Mommy!” Sophie screamed.

Marta tried to hold her back.

“Wait, sweetheart. Please wait.”

Sophie twisted free.

She ran past the broken mirror, past the scattered pieces of carved wood, and dropped beside Claire.

Her mother’s skin looked pale. Her breathing was shallow, but it was there.

Sophie placed both hands on Claire’s shoulder.

“Mommy, wake up.”

Daniel turned.

The fireplace poker remained raised beside his face.

For one frozen second, father and daughter stared at each other.

Sophie had seen him angry before. She had heard doors slam and glasses break behind closed rooms. But she had never seen him look afraid.

Not of Claire.

Not of the police.

Of the wall.

“Move away from her,” Daniel said.

Sophie tightened her arms around Claire.

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“She fainted because she is sick.”

“You gave her the tea.”

Marta inhaled sharply.

Daniel lowered the poker.

“What did you say?”

Sophie remembered her mother lifting the silver cup in the morning room. She remembered Daniel standing beside her until she drank. She remembered Claire whispering, “If I fall asleep, find the swallow.”

Sophie looked toward the damaged hallway.

Near the ceiling, above the seventh panel, a small brass bird remained attached to the molding.

Daniel followed her gaze.

His fear became certainty.

He moved toward it.

Sophie stood between him and her mother.

“Grandpa said the wall remembers,” she said.

Daniel stopped.

Behind them, Marta quietly pressed the emergency button on her phone.

Daniel looked at the brass swallow again.

Then he looked at the little girl.

“Give me the key, Sophie.”

She felt the tiny object hidden inside her white sock.

Her grandfather’s key.

The key Daniel had spent twenty minutes destroying the hallway to find.

Sophie lifted her chin.

“I don’t have it.”

For the first time in her life, she lied to her father without looking away.
