The Key in the Sock

Chapter 19 - The Key in the Sock

The brass swallow key entered the Morgan Center archive.

Sophie initially refused to donate it.

“It is mine.”

Claire agreed.

The key remained in a small box beside Sophie’s bed for three years.

On the fifth anniversary of Robert’s death, Sophie made her own decision.

She placed the key in the archive with a handwritten note.

I HID THIS IN MY SOCK BECAUSE I THOUGHT MY DAD WOULD TAKE IT.

I WAS SCARED.

BEING SCARED DID NOT MEAN I WAS WRONG.

The archive director asked whether the note should be corrected for grammar.

Claire said no.

History had been polished enough by adults.

Sophie’s language remained hers.

The exhibit became the center’s most visited display.

People expected the damaged wall or the iron poker to hold the story’s power.

Instead, they stopped before a tiny key and a child’s note.
