Helena Without the Portraits

Chapter 14 - Helena Without the Portraits

Helena entered prison still insisting Robert’s confession was the result of illness.

She requested a meeting with Sophie.

Claire refused.

When Sophie became older, she could decide for herself.

Helena then requested a meeting with Claire.

Claire accepted once.

Helena appeared through glass without pearls, assistants, or portraits.

“You turned Robert against his own family,” she said.

“He recorded the confession before I knew it existed.”

“He was weak at the end.”

“He was honest at the end.”

Helena looked away.

She claimed Eleanor Morgan would have ruined the company by exposing the off-book loans during the recession. Robert’s silence preserved the hotels.

Claire asked whether that justified destroying Eleanor’s career.

Helena replied, “We all sacrificed.”

“No. You selected who sacrificed.”

That distinction ended the conversation.

Helena never apologized.

Claire stopped waiting.
