The Boardroom with Two Founders

Chapter 10 - The Boardroom with Two Founders
The receiver scheduled a public board meeting at the first Vale Crown hotel.
The building stood on land still legally tied to Eleanor Morgan’s estate.
Claire arrived in a wheelchair because lingering nerve damage from the crash made walking difficult. Sophie held her hand. Marta walked beside them.
Above the lobby entrance hung a bronze plaque.
ROBERT VALE, FOUNDER.
Before the meeting began, workers covered it with cloth.
Helena watched from the front row.
“You cannot rewrite history with fabric,” she said.
Claire answered.
“No. We use documents.”
Michael Grant presented the original charter, land deeds, blueprints, and Robert’s confession.
A historian explained Eleanor’s design work.
Former employees testified that she negotiated construction contracts and managed the first hotel opening.
The board recognized Eleanor Morgan as co-founder.
Then came the ownership question.
Claire held a valid claim to forty-nine percent of the original company and decades of diverted profits.
Investors expected her to demand control.
Helena expected revenge.
Claire proposed something else.
Her recovered shares would enter a temporary restitution trust. Employees whose pensions had been manipulated would receive priority. The first hotel’s land would transfer into a public-benefit foundation supporting women in architecture and workers challenging corporate fraud.
The remaining company would be restructured with no permanent family control.
Helena laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed a dynasty only to give it away.”
Claire looked at Sophie.
“A child should not inherit a courtroom disguised as a hotel.”
The board approved the plan.
Workers removed the cloth from the lobby plaque.
A second name had been added.
ROBERT VALE & ELEANOR MORGAN, CO-FOUNDERS.

Sophie read it aloud.
For Claire, that sound mattered more than the vote.
