Claire Walks the Hallway

Chapter 18 - Claire Walks the Hallway

Two years after the crash, Claire returned to Hawthorne House for the Morgan Center’s opening.

She used a cane.

Her doctors had never promised she would walk independently, but therapy restored enough strength for short distances.

Sophie walked beside her without touching unless asked.

At the start of the damaged hallway, reporters raised cameras.

Claire stopped.

“This is not a recovery performance,” she said. “Please lower them.”

Most did.

She crossed the marble slowly.

Past the place where she collapsed.

Past the broken mirror.

Past the seventh panel.

At the end, she turned toward Sophie.

The girl smiled but did not clap.

They had agreed that walking was not victory and using a wheelchair was not defeat.

Choice was the point.

Claire sat in the chair waiting near the library.

“Much better,” she said.

Sophie climbed into the seat beside her.

The room laughed.

May you like

Not at disability.

At the refusal to make it solemn.
