Daniel’s Version of the Hallway

Chapter 11 - Daniel’s Version of the Hallway

Daniel requested a private meeting with Claire before his arrest hearing.

She agreed with attorneys and a camera present.

He entered wearing a gray suit instead of black. Without Hawthorne House around him, he looked less like an heir and more like a tired man who had practiced certainty too long.

“I did not mean for you to collapse,” he said.

“You crushed pills into my tea.”

“Keene said the dose was safe.”

“You prepared guardianship papers.”

“To protect the company while you were confused.”

“I was confused because you drugged me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He described the hallway differently.

Robert had hidden evidence that could trigger default, lawsuits, and mass layoffs. Daniel believed destroying it would protect thousands of employees. Claire confronted him. She became dizzy. He panicked and began searching for the box before authorities arrived.

“You smashed the house while I lay on the floor,” Claire said.

“I knew you were breathing.”

The sentence contained the moral limit of his concern.

Alive was enough.

Consent, safety, dignity, and truth became optional once breathing continued.

Daniel leaned forward.

“I loved you.”

Claire believed him.

That was the hardest part.

“You loved me until I became expensive.”

“No.”

“You loved the version of me who did not know what belonged to her.”

He asked about Sophie.

Claire’s expression changed.

“You prepared a medical file to call her unstable.”

“I never intended to use it.”

“You only paid someone to write it.”

Daniel began crying.

Claire felt grief but no responsibility to rescue him from it.

He had mistaken her empathy for a renewable resource.

The meeting ended when Daniel asked her to tell prosecutors the tea was a misunderstanding.

Claire stood.

“You are still asking me to drink it.”
