Marta’s Testimony

Chapter 12 - Marta’s Testimony

Marta Ruiz had worked at Hawthorne House for seventeen years.

She knew which floorboard creaked near the nursery, which flowers Helena disliked, and how many glasses Daniel drank before his voice changed.

For years, she called what she witnessed “family tension.”

At trial preparation, Lena asked why Marta had not spoken sooner.

“Because every event was small when separated,” Marta said.

A door slammed.

A wrist grabbed.

A medication changed.

A bank card removed.

A child told not to repeat something.

Each incident could be explained.

Together, they formed a system.

Marta had kept a calendar.

Not because she planned a case.

Because Claire repeatedly asked whether events happened the way she remembered.

Marta wrote dates so she could answer honestly.

The calendar became crucial evidence.

It showed medication increases before legal meetings.

It showed Daniel home on the night Claire’s car was sabotaged despite claiming he was in Boston.

It showed Keene visiting Sophie’s school without Claire’s knowledge.

Marta’s phone also contained the emergency message she sent the day of the hallway attack.

HE IS BREAKING THE WALL. CLAIRE DOWN. SOPHIE HERE.

Daniel’s attorney tried to portray her as resentful household staff.

Marta answered calmly.

“I was paid to clean the house. I was not paid to clean the record.”

The sentence appeared in newspapers.

Marta disliked the attention.

She cared about one result.

Sophie stopped apologizing for running to her mother.

“You did not disobey me,” Marta told her. “You chose where you needed to be.”
