Helena’s Family Dinner

Chapter 08 - Helena’s Family Dinner
Helena Vale called an emergency family dinner while Daniel remained under investigation.
She invited board members, relatives, and two reporters.
The invitation described the gathering as an effort to preserve Robert Vale’s legacy against a fraudulent attack by his daughter-in-law.
Claire did not attend.
Sophie did.
Not physically.
Her recorded statement did.
The court-appointed child advocate had asked Sophie whether she wanted to explain what she saw. Sophie agreed on one condition: no one could show her face.
At the dinner, Helena stood beneath Robert’s portrait and accused Claire of manipulating a frightened child.
Then the lights dimmed.
The advocate’s audio played through the dining room.
“My dad broke the hallway because he wanted Grandpa’s box. My mom was asleep on the floor. Dad had the metal stick. He asked me for the key. I said I didn’t have it because I thought he would hurt the wall until the truth was gone.”
The room remained silent.
Sophie continued.
“Grandma Helena said I was foolish after the police found it. I am not foolish. I was scared.”
One board member stood and left.
Then another.
The reporters began asking Helena questions.
She tried to turn off the recording.
Her own assistant stepped away from the controls.
The board called a vote that night.
Helena was suspended as chair.
Daniel was suspended as chief executive.
An independent receiver took control of Vale Crown.
Helena called Claire from an unknown number.
“You used a child to destroy her family.”
Claire answered.
May you like
“No. Your family used a child as the only person expected to tell the truth.”
Helena hung up.
