The Watch on the Pedestal

Chapter 01 - The Watch on the Pedestal
Emily Hart’s thirty-fifth birthday celebration filled the Mercer Grand ballroom with crystal light, white roses, and five hundred guests who believed they were attending the most elegant party of the season.
By nine o’clock, Emily stood alone beside a marble pedestal while her husband held up a gold watch and called her a thief.
Julian Mercer wore a pale-gray dinner jacket and the calm expression he used during hostile board meetings.
“This belonged to my grandfather,” he announced. “Emily took it from our private vault and tried to sell it.”
Guests stared.
Emily’s silver dress glittered beneath the chandeliers, but tears had smudged the makeup around her eyes. She had spent the last hour feeling dizzy and struggling to understand why Julian’s mother kept pressing a drink into her hand.
“I have never seen that watch before tonight,” she said.
Julian placed it on the pedestal.
His mother, Vivian Mercer, stood beside the birthday cake in a black beaded gown.
“She has not been herself for months,” Vivian told the guests. “We hoped to protect her dignity.”
Julian produced a folder.
Inside was an emergency medical petition declaring Emily incapable of managing her finances.
“At midnight,” he said, “her inheritance becomes active. I cannot allow an unstable person to control thousands of employees.”
Emily looked toward the doors.
They opened.
Her father, Thomas Hart, entered wearing a black suit. Behind him stood District Attorney Lena Ortiz and two evidence officers carrying sealed cases.
The ballroom became silent.
Thomas walked to the pedestal and studied the watch without touching it.
Then he looked at Emily’s half-filled glass.
“Nobody moves,” he said.
Julian laughed. “You cannot turn a birthday disagreement into a criminal investigation.”
Thomas faced the guests.
“I didn’t.”
He pointed to the watch.
“My late wife did—when she placed a forensic trigger inside that case twelve years ago.”
A blue light blinked beneath the watch face.
Ortiz raised the warrant.
“This ballroom is now a preserved scene involving suspected poisoning, forged medical records, and attempted trust fraud.”
Near the cake, Vivian quietly pushed a drawer closed.
An officer saw her.
