The watch archive opened under court supervision.
Catherine’s voice began the first file.
“If Emily is hearing this, someone has mistaken my death for the end of my audit.”
She had discovered missing money inside Hart Biomedical’s patient-assistance program.
The fund paid for prosthetics, respiratory devices, and rehabilitation services for people whose insurance refused coverage.
Millions had been redirected into companies associated with Mercer Health Holdings.
At the time, Julian’s father served as Hart Biomedical’s outside investment adviser.
Vivian managed charitable partnerships.
Catherine planned to end every Mercer contract.
Three weeks later, she died during a private flight after a medical emergency.
No criminal evidence had ever connected the Mercers to her death. Catherine had been receiving treatment for a heart condition, and Thomas refused to turn uncertainty into accusation.
But the audit survived.
It showed that the theft continued after Catherine died.
When Julian married Emily, Mercer companies gained deeper access to the trust.
The latest files were not from twelve years earlier.
Someone had updated the archive six months before the birthday.
A Hart Biomedical compliance officer named Laura Chen had discovered Catherine’s watch during an inventory review. She added current account records and scheduled the emergency upload.
Laura disappeared one week later.
Mercer Health announced that she suffered a psychiatric breakdown and entered private treatment.
The clinic was owned by Julian’s uncle.
Emily remembered Laura.
She had tried to speak with Emily after a board luncheon. Julian interrupted and said Laura was exhausted.
Emily accepted the explanation.
The watch contained Laura’s final message.
“They are using the same incapacity system on employees, patients, and heirs. If I vanish, look at Mercer Rest Center, patient C-51.”
C-51 matched Catherine’s ownership percentage.
Ortiz obtained a warrant.
Before officers reached the facility, a transport van left through the rear gate.
