Thomas Gives Up the Watch

Chapter 17 - Thomas Gives Up the Watch

Thomas had expected Catherine’s watch to remain with the Hart family.

Emily disagreed.

The mechanism represented private evidence hidden inside a valuable object, accessible only because of bloodline knowledge.

She wanted the technical design preserved publicly while keeping Catherine’s personal recordings private.

The Patient and Worker Trust created an archive.

The watch’s sensor, upload protocol, and chain-of-custody design became part of a training exhibit.

Catherine’s voice files remained sealed for Emily.

The physical watch stayed with her until she decided otherwise.

Thomas accepted the arrangement.

He also opened his own corporate papers to review.

The audit found decisions he made after Catherine’s death that unintentionally strengthened Mercer access.

He had trusted the same attorneys because replacing them felt disloyal to Catherine’s history.

Thomas published the findings and repaid fees his companies had improperly received.

Some friends told him he was damaging his legacy.

He replied:

“A legacy that cannot survive accurate records deserves damage.”

His relationship with Emily became warmer but not dependent.

She sometimes ignored his calls for a day.

He learned not to interpret delay as danger or disrespect.
