The Speech Julian Rehearsed

Chapter 04 - The Speech Julian Rehearsed

The Mercer Grand security system recorded preparations throughout the afternoon.

In a service corridor, Julian rehearsed his accusation with Vivian and the event director.

He practiced where Emily should stand.

He tested how the watch would appear beneath the chandelier.

He instructed the photographer to capture Emily’s face immediately after the theft announcement.

“If she cries, keep shooting,” he said. “The court needs emotional instability.”

Vivian suggested mentioning alcohol.

Julian answered, “The glass will handle that.”

The event director, Rosa Martinez, had believed they were preparing a surprise performance. When she understood the truth, she secretly copied the corridor footage to a personal drive.

Rosa did not contact police immediately.

Her apartment, health insurance, and mother’s medical care were connected to her employment at Mercer Grand.

Vivian had fired employees for smaller acts of disobedience.

Rosa planned to send the files after the party.

The arrival of investigators allowed her to hand them over that night.

The video also showed Julian’s assistant placing the gold watch inside Emily’s handbag before guests entered.

Later, Julian pretended to discover it.

He had not merely taken advantage of Emily’s confusion.

He had designed the confusion, audience, evidence, and narrative in advance.

Emily watched the footage with a victim advocate.

She did not ask why nobody stopped him sooner.

That question would have turned other people’s fear into another burden she had to manage.

Instead, she asked what protections employees would receive for cooperating.

Ortiz arranged temporary job, housing, and legal safeguards.

Seven staff members came forward by morning.

A bartender had seen Vivian use the dropper.

A photographer had received instructions to delete images showing the watch being planted.

A server heard Julian tell his mother that the judge would approve the petition “before the birthday candles burned down.”

The glamorous celebration had required dozens of workers.

Its secrecy had required each one to believe they stood alone.

They no longer did.
