Julian’s Letter

Chapter 18 - Julian’s Letter

Four years into his sentence, Julian wrote to Emily through a court-approved program.

The first letter blamed Vivian.

The program did not forward it.

The second described his own choices.

He admitted choosing the sedative because he feared Emily might remain too composed for the guardianship story.

He admitted placing Catherine’s watch in her handbag.

He admitted enjoying the moment guests turned against her because it made resistance feel finished.

The sentence hurt more than the legal language.

Julian wrote:

I believed one night of humiliation was a reasonable price for ten years of control.

He asked for nothing.

Emily read the letter with a counselor.

She did not reply.

Two years later, Julian provided account codes that recovered additional patient money.

The cooperation mattered to people who received restitution.

It did not create a relationship with Emily.

When asked whether she forgave him, she stopped answering the question.

Forgiveness had become another performance outsiders expected from the woman harmed.

Her boundary was simpler.

Julian’s future belonged to the consequences of his choices.

Emily’s future did not require his presence.
