Catherine Hart had created a medical-device company with Thomas before Emily was born.
Their inventions funded community clinics, rehabilitation centers, and employee health programs across six states.
Catherine distrusted inherited control.
Her will placed fifty-one percent of Hart Biomedical Trust into a protected structure for Emily, but the voting rights would not activate until her thirty-fifth birthday.
At midnight, Emily would gain temporary authority to choose one of two futures.
She could keep the shares in a private family trust.
Or she could transfer them permanently to a board representing patients, employees, nurses, and independent scientists.
Julian wanted a third option.
The trust contained a loophole written during Catherine’s final illness.
If Emily were declared medically incapable before midnight, her legal spouse could serve as temporary guardian and delay the public transfer for ten years.
Thomas had approved the clause because Catherine’s doctors said it protected Emily during emergencies.
He never imagined a husband would manufacture the emergency.
Julian’s petition described Emily as paranoid, impulsive, addicted to alcohol, and obsessed with conspiracies about company money.
The supporting psychiatrist was Dr. Paul Mercer, Julian’s uncle.
Emily had never met him privately.
Several “evaluations” listed in the petition were ordinary video calls she believed were employee-benefit briefings.
Vivian recorded them.
Julian used edited clips to create a medical history.
The birthday party was designed as the final piece.
He would accuse Emily publicly, show guests her confusion, display the “stolen” watch, and file the guardianship order before midnight.
The sedative in her glass would make every reaction look unstable.
Thomas had not arrived by accident.
The watch trigger sent him an alert at 8:52, together with a short audio clip of Julian opening the case.
Thomas contacted Ortiz rather than entering alone.
He knew anger without lawful preservation could become another gift to the conspirators.
