Julian’s Version of Love

Chapter 10 - Julian’s Version of Love

Julian requested a supervised meeting with Emily.

He arrived without the pale-gray dinner jacket.

He looked younger in an ordinary navy suit, which made the cruelty of his choices harder to place inside a simple villain’s face.

“I loved you,” he said.

Emily did not argue.

People could feel love and still use another person.

Julian said Vivian convinced him the public trust would destroy Mercer Health and reduce Hart Biomedical to political management.

He believed keeping the shares inside the marriage protected both families.

“Then why humiliate me?” Emily asked.

“You would not sign.”

“Why the sedative?”

“You were becoming impossible to reason with.”

“Why the false doctor?”

Julian looked down.

Every answer led back to the same belief.

When Emily’s choice threatened his plan, he treated her choice as evidence of illness.

He offered to surrender his trust claim, apologize publicly, and cooperate against Vivian if Emily declined to support criminal charges.

She refused.

“You are offering back authority that was never yours in exchange for privacy you denied me in front of five hundred people.”

Julian asked whether she remembered their good years.

She did.

The vacations were real.

The laughter was real.

So were the intercepted calls, altered forms, and birthday stage.

Acknowledging tenderness did not weaken the evidence.

It explained why deception reached so deeply.

The meeting ended without reconciliation or revenge.

Emily filed for divorce and a protective order limiting contact to attorneys.

Julian appeared genuinely devastated.

His feelings became his responsibility.

Emily had spent too long being told another person’s distress required her compliance.
