Vivian’s Family Defense

Chapter 08 - Vivian’s Family Defense
Vivian held a press conference outside Mercer Grand.
She wore black and described the birthday as a painful family misunderstanding.
She claimed Emily had taken medication voluntarily and forgotten.
She said the watch belonged to Julian’s grandfather because Catherine once gifted it to the Mercer family.
The registration records disproved that.
Vivian then changed tactics.
She warned that freezing Mercer accounts would close clinics, delay patient care, and cost thousands of jobs.
The public had heard similar arguments from institutions under investigation.
Emily answered through a written statement.
“Patients needing care are not permission to drug a person, falsify records, or steal charitable funds.”
Mercer employees began providing evidence.
A pharmacy technician preserved unauthorized sedative orders.
A billing specialist kept spreadsheets showing patient-assistance money transferred into luxury properties.
A driver photographed people moved between private facilities under false names.
Vivian’s influence had not made everyone loyal.
It had made resistance feel dangerous and disconnected.
The investigation created a protected reporting channel.
Within forty-eight hours, more than sixty workers contacted Ortiz.
One was Vivian’s personal assistant, Helen Brooks.
Helen had prepared the birthday drawer because Vivian said it contained emergency migraine medication.
When Helen saw the guardianship order, she began photographing documents.
She had hidden a second copy inside the cake stand.
The copy proved Vivian planned the incapacity claim three months before Emily’s birthday.
Vivian called Helen ungrateful.
Helen answered through her attorney.
“A paycheck purchased my work. It did not purchase my agreement to rewrite another woman’s life.”
The statement became the line most frequently repeated from the case.

Not because it was dramatic.
Because thousands of workers recognized the pressure behind it.
