The Court Before Midnight

Chapter 09 - The Court Before Midnight

The emergency trust hearing began at 10:36 that night.

Julian’s attorneys still attempted to obtain temporary guardianship.

They argued Emily’s sedative exposure and emotional distress made her unable to decide the trust’s future.

The judge asked who placed the sedative in her drink.

The attorneys requested time to investigate.

Ortiz presented the vial, messages, audio, and corridor footage.

The judge denied the guardianship petition and suspended Julian’s authority as spouse over any financial or medical matter connected to Emily.

A temporary independent advocate was appointed.

The trust shares remained frozen until Emily recovered and could choose without pressure.

Julian protested that the delay would destabilize the company.

The judge replied:

“A deadline created by a private trust does not override the right to informed consent.”

Midnight passed while Emily slept in a secure hospital room.

Nothing transferred.

No spouse gained control.

No empire collapsed because one woman waited before signing.

The next morning, Emily asked whether the court could permanently remove the birthday deadline.

The trust attorneys said Catherine’s documents allowed amendment if coercion had occurred.

Emily wanted more than an amendment.

She wanted the entire structure reviewed by patients and employees before making her choice.

Some advisers warned that public participation could reduce the value of her inheritance.

Emily looked at Catherine’s watch inside its evidence bag.

“My mother did not preserve this so I could become the next person making decisions alone.”

The court extended the freeze.
