Anna Asks About the Pendant

Chapter 18 - Anna Asks About the Pendant
When Anna was eight, she found the silver SOS pendant in Elena’s desk.
“Is this the necklace that called Uncle Gabriel?”
“It sent a signal to an emergency service. He was one of the people notified.”
“Did Dad know?”
“No.”
“Did he scare you?”
“Yes.”
Anna knew Mason lived in prison and that contact would remain her choice when she was older.
“Did Uncle Gabriel fight him?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because he came to make me safe, not to prove he was stronger.”
Anna pressed the pendant’s center.
Nothing happened. The device had been deactivated and preserved for the Harbor House archive.
Elena explained how the modern system worked.
Signals reached advocates, doctors, and police.
No single relative became responsible for rescue.
Anna placed the pendant back.
“Can I get one when I’m older?”
“You can learn every way to ask for help. A device is only one.”

The lesson was not that danger required a heroic brother.
It was that asking for help should reach people prepared to listen.
