The Woman in the Old Photograph

Chapter 06 - The Woman in the Old Photograph

While reviewing her father’s files, Elena found a photograph taken outside the first Harbor House residence.

Andrew Parker stood beside a young woman wearing a Vale Construction badge.

On the back, he had written:

MARGARET VALE — SHE BUILT THE FIRST HOUSE AND PAID THE PRICE.

Elena assumed Margaret was a relative of Richard.

Gabriel remembered their father mentioning an engineer who exposed unsafe materials in military-family housing.

Corporate histories listed no Margaret Vale.

Richard’s family records described only one sister, Evelyn, Mason’s mother.

Detective Ortiz searched older court files.

Margaret Vale had been Richard’s younger sister and the original owner of Vale Construction.

She discovered Richard replacing approved fire-resistant materials with cheaper products.

When she objected, he had her declared mentally incapable.

Dean Cross’s father prepared the guardianship.

Margaret’s shares transferred to Richard.

She disappeared into a private care facility twenty-seven years earlier.

Andrew Parker tried to help her.

That explained why Richard targeted Harbor House long before Elena married Mason.

The theft was not only financial.

Richard wanted the foundation archive because Andrew preserved Margaret’s engineering reports and original ownership papers.

Elena’s marriage gave the Vales access to the last records capable of overturning Richard’s control.

Gabriel found a recurring payment to Patient M-14 at North Ridge Veterans Recovery Center.

The facility was owned by Vale Health Partners.

Patient M-14 had no public name.

The latest payment was made that week.

Margaret Vale might still be alive.

Evelyn had spent decades living as Richard’s only sister while another sister remained erased from the family.
