The Brother They Expected to Attack

Chapter 03 - The Brother They Expected to Attack

News of the penthouse confrontation leaked before midnight.

By morning, a video filmed from the lobby showed Gabriel entering the building with police.

Headlines called him Elena’s “ex-Marine brother who stormed the Vale residence.”

The footage excluded the officers walking beside him.

Mason’s public-relations team described Gabriel as aggressive and emotionally unstable after military service.

Gabriel called no reporter.

He provided his complete body-camera recording to investigators.

After leaving the Marines, he had worked as a licensed security consultant specializing in crisis response. The camera activated automatically whenever the pendant sent an alert.

It showed him waiting for Ortiz before entering.

It showed his empty hands.

It showed Mason attempting to provoke him.

The full footage spread quickly.

The story changed.

Gabriel had not arrived for revenge.

He arrived prepared to preserve evidence.

Elena remained at Saint Matthew’s Women’s Hospital overnight.

Her doctor found no emergency complication but ordered rest and reduced stress.

Mason sent flowers.

The card said:

I NEVER MEANT TO FRIGHTEN YOU.

Elena asked a nurse to photograph the card for evidence before removing it.

Gabriel sat beside her bed.

“I should have noticed sooner.”

“You live three states away.”

“You stopped calling as often.”

“Mason said marriage required privacy.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Their father had taught both children that privacy protected dignity.

The Vales used the same word to isolate Elena.

“I believed you were busy,” he said.

“I wanted you to believe that.”

Neither of them turned regret into blame.

Detective Ortiz arrived with the forged transfer documents.

Harbor House’s accounts showed more than forty million dollars missing.

The money had entered construction companies linked to Richard Vale.

Mason did not merely want Elena’s signature to protect a family business.

He needed it to legalize theft already committed.
