The Recording No One Could Erase

Chapter 02 - The Recording No One Could Erase

Detective Ortiz ordered Mason to move away from Elena.

Gabriel remained several feet from his brother-in-law while a female officer helped Elena stand and guided her toward a chair.

A paramedic from the elevator checked her pulse and the baby’s movement.

Elena was frightened and exhausted, but physically stable.

Richard immediately changed his tone.

“This is a private marital disagreement.”

Ortiz held up a tablet.

“The SOS service transmitted live audio for eleven minutes.”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

She had been recorded encouraging Mason to force the signature.

Mason claimed the cane was decorative and that Elena had fallen while arguing.

The audio captured him saying, “Sign before I make you regret refusing.”

It also captured Richard instructing him not to leave visible evidence.

Gabriel looked at Mason.

The former Marine had spent years learning that discipline mattered most when anger felt justified.

He kept both hands visible.

“You will speak to the police, not to me.”

Mason seemed disappointed.

He wanted Gabriel to lose control.

A fight would allow the Vales to turn the rescue into an attack by an unstable veteran.

Gabriel refused to give them that story.

Ortiz collected the transfer papers.

The signature page already carried Elena’s name.

She had not signed it.

A handwriting expert would later confirm that Mason’s assistant had copied her signature from a prenatal insurance form.

The elevator doors opened again.

Family attorney Dean Cross arrived carrying an emergency guardianship order.

He claimed Elena had been declared financially incapable earlier that afternoon.

Ortiz examined the document.

The judge’s authorization box was blank.

“This has not been approved.”

Dean replied, “It was prepared for filing.”

“Then it has no legal force.”

The pendant continued recording.

Dean’s next words entered the evidence file:

“It would have been approved by morning.”

Elena looked at Gabriel.

“They planned all of this.”

May you like

Gabriel nodded.

“Then we uncover all of it.”
