The Nursery Door

Chapter 01 - The Nursery Door

Caleb Hart heard his wife cry out before he reached the nursery.

He had returned from Chicago two days early, carrying one overnight bag and a yellow stuffed rabbit he had bought for his three-month-old daughter. The house was unusually quiet. No music from the kitchen. No footsteps from the staff. Only a low, broken sound from the second floor.

Then came his mother’s voice.

“You will sign it before he comes home.”

Caleb dropped the bag.

The nursery door stood partly open.

Inside, his wife was on the carpet beside the white crib. Maya Hart’s dark hair had fallen across her face. One hand covered the side of her head; the other reached toward the crib as if she needed to reassure herself that the baby remained there.

His mother, Evelyn Hart, stood over her.

Evelyn wore a dark charcoal dress and pearl earrings. Her silver hair remained perfectly arranged despite the scene. One hand was still closed around several strands of Maya’s hair.

Baby Rose slept inside the crib beneath a pale blue blanket.

Caleb entered.

“Let her go.”

Evelyn turned sharply.

Maya pulled away and curled beside the crib.

Caleb crossed the room, knelt, and placed himself between them. He did not touch Maya until she nodded. Then he helped her sit against the upholstered chair.

“What happened?”

Evelyn answered first.

“She became hysterical. I stopped her from taking the baby outside.”

Maya looked at Caleb.

“She locked the door.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Your wife has not been well since the birth.”

Maya pointed toward a blue folder on the changing table.

“She wanted me to sign that.”

Caleb opened it.

The first page declared Maya temporarily incapable of caring for Rose because of postpartum psychosis.

The second appointed Evelyn emergency guardian.

The third transferred Maya’s voting authority in the Hart Family Trust to Evelyn “for the protection of the child.”

Caleb’s signature appeared at the bottom.

He had never signed it.

A soft chime sounded above the crib.

The baby monitor’s green light turned red.

Cloud recording complete.

Evelyn looked up.

For the first time, she appeared frightened.

Maya whispered, “It heard everything.”
