When Rose was seven, she asked why her baby photographs showed three different houses.
Maya explained that the family moved because the first house stopped feeling safe.
“Was I in danger?”
“No. You were protected in your crib.”
“Were you in danger?”
Maya paused.
“Yes.”
“Did Dad save you?”
“Dad came home and believed the recording. Other people helped too. I also hid the code and asked for help.”
Caleb sat nearby.
He did not correct the version to make himself larger.
Rose asked why Grandma Evelyn was absent.
Caleb answered.
“She made choices that hurt Mom and tried to take control of things that were not hers.”
“Does she love me?”

“Maybe. Love does not make every choice safe.”
Rose accepted the answer more easily than adults often did.
