The Voice in the Monitor

Chapter 02 - The Voice in the Monitor

Caleb removed the monitor from its wall mount.

Evelyn stepped toward him.

“That device belongs to the household.”

“No,” Maya said. “It belongs to Rose.”

Caleb opened the monitor application on his phone. The system required two-factor access. His account had been locked out three weeks earlier, and Evelyn had told him a software update caused the problem.

Maya entered a backup code written beneath the crib mattress.

The recording began forty-six minutes earlier.

Evelyn’s voice filled the room.

You will tell Caleb you dropped the baby last week.

Maya answered.

I never dropped her.

Then you will sign the incapacity form, or I will make certain he sees the photographs and the medical report.

There was a scrape, the sound of Maya trying the locked door, then Evelyn again.

Once I control the trust, you can recover somewhere private. Rose will be raised properly.

Caleb stopped the playback.

His mother’s expression became cold.

“Maya edited that.”

“The file is time-stamped and uploaded directly to the manufacturer’s server,” he said.

“She has manipulated you since the pregnancy.”

Maya laughed once, without humor.

“I could barely speak to him without you entering the room.”

Caleb looked at the strands of dark hair still caught around Evelyn’s ring.

“You pulled her to the floor.”

“She resisted.”

The words escaped too quickly.

Caleb’s face changed.

The baby stirred.

Maya rose carefully and lifted Rose from the crib. The child was unharmed, warm, and sleepy.

Caleb moved toward the hall and called emergency services.

Evelyn folded her arms.

“You are involving police in a family disagreement?”

“No,” he said. “I’m involving police because you created legal documents, locked my wife in a room, and used fear to force a signature.”

She looked toward the blue folder.

“Everything I did was to protect your daughter.”

Maya held Rose closer.

“From her mother?”

May you like

Evelyn did not answer.

The silence revealed the truth more clearly than the recording.
