Eight years after the trial, Caleb visited Evelyn in prison.
Maya did not attend.
Rose had chosen no contact.
Evelyn asked for photographs.
Caleb refused.
“I am her grandmother.”
“That describes the relationship. It does not create permission.”
Evelyn looked at him for a long time.
“You speak like Maya now.”
“I speak more carefully now.”
She asked whether Maya had forgiven her.
Caleb said the question belonged to Maya.
“Have you?”
“I stopped needing anger to enforce the boundary.”
Evelyn looked disappointed, as if forgiveness without access had no value.
Caleb understood.
For her, relationship had always been proven through authority.
