The Trust That Began at Birth

Chapter 03 - The Trust That Began at Birth
The Hart Family Trust had existed for sixty years.
Caleb believed it was a conventional structure holding company shares, real estate, and the medical-device patents that made the Hart family wealthy.
He had never read the provision triggered by the birth of the first child in his generation.
His father, Samuel Hart, wrote it before his death.
When Rose was born, control of the trust shifted from Evelyn’s temporary stewardship to a three-person board:
Caleb.
An independent trustee.
And the child’s mother.
Maya’s signature carried equal weight.
Evelyn lost the unilateral authority she had exercised for eleven years.
Three weeks after Rose’s birth, the trust was scheduled to vote on the sale of Hart Pediatric Systems to a private investment group.
Maya opposed it.
The buyer planned to close two factories, move infant-monitor production overseas, and sell patient data collected through connected devices.
Evelyn supported the sale.
Her brother’s consulting company would receive thirty-five million dollars.
Attorney Naomi Bell arrived with police and a physician. She examined the blue folder.
“This is not a medical form,” she said. “It is a control instrument.”
The incapacity declaration cited an evaluation by Dr. Leonard Crane.
Maya had never met him alone.
The report claimed she suffered hallucinations, dangerous attachment, and inability to distinguish dreams from reality.
The date of the diagnosis was two weeks before Rose was born.
Before Maya could have developed the postpartum condition described.

Caleb stared at the date.
His mother had prepared to call his wife unfit before his daughter entered the world.
