Evelyn’s Version of Protection

Chapter 11 - Evelyn’s Version of Protection

Evelyn requested a meeting with Caleb before trial.

Maya declined to attend.

Caleb agreed only with attorneys and cameras present.

Evelyn appeared smaller without Hart House around her.

“I gave you everything,” she said.

“You gave me opportunities.”

“I built the company after your father became ill.”

“That is true.”

“I protected the employees.”

“Sometimes.”

Her anger rose.

“Maya arrived and immediately questioned decisions she did not understand.”

“She understood the side agreements.”

“She wanted to take my place.”

“The trust required shared control.”

“Shared control is what people demand when they cannot lead.”

Caleb finally understood the central belief.

Evelyn did not experience collaboration as partnership.

She experienced it as removal.

Rose’s birth did not give her a granddaughter first.

It gave her a deadline.

“Did you intend to take Rose from Maya?” he asked.

“I intended to keep the child safe.”

“From what?”

Evelyn had no answer that did not reveal the plan.

From Maya’s vote.

From the trust clause.

From a future Evelyn could no longer direct alone.
