The Medicine in the Night Bottle

Chapter 05 - The Medicine in the Night Bottle
Dr. Lena Morris examined Maya at the hospital.
The injuries were non-life-threatening: a tender scalp, bruising around one wrist, and soreness from the fall. Rose’s examination was normal.
Blood tests revealed a sedative in Maya’s system.
She had not knowingly taken one.
Since the birth, Evelyn had insisted Maya drink a nighttime vitamin mixture to support recovery. The bottles arrived from Dr. Crane’s clinic without labels.
The mixture contained a low-dose sedative.
Enough to create fatigue, delayed speech, and memory problems.
Those symptoms appeared throughout Crane’s reports as proof of mental illness.
Maya had repeatedly complained that the drink made her feel foggy.
Evelyn told Caleb postpartum exhaustion was normal.
Caleb had repeated the explanation to Maya.
“I helped her doubt herself,” he said.
Dr. Morris answered carefully.
“You repeated information from someone you trusted. What matters now is whether you accept evidence and change your behavior.”
Maya heard the conversation from the examination room.
She did not comfort Caleb.
His guilt was real.
It was not the emergency.

She asked the physician to document every medication, every injury, and every decision in a chart Evelyn could not access.
For the first time since Rose’s birth, Maya controlled her own medical record.
