Why Maya Stayed Quiet

Chapter 07 - Why Maya Stayed Quiet
Maya had considered leaving Hart House during pregnancy.
Each time, Evelyn changed strategy.
She apologized.
She arranged flowers.
She described Caleb’s stress and warned that a public family conflict could collapse the company.
Then she reminded Maya that the trust owned the house, the cars, and the medical insurance.
“You can leave,” Evelyn once said. “But you will leave without the protection Rose needs.”
Maya knew the statement was legally false.
Emotionally, it worked.
After the birth, Evelyn controlled access to the car and dismissed Maya’s longtime driver.
She replaced the maternity nurse with someone from Dr. Crane’s clinic.
She moved into the guest suite “temporarily.”
The house became smaller around Maya without any wall moving.
Maya hid the baby monitor’s backup code beneath the mattress after noticing the administrator account had changed.
She began speaking clearly near the crib whenever Evelyn entered.
