The Mercer estate became a worker training and retirement center.
Some employees wanted to name it after Daniel.
Rose declined.
Daniel tried to correct the truth late, but he also accepted the arrangement that kept Rose near her son as a servant.
Love did not erase cowardice.
The center was named the Railway Families House.
Thomas visited once.
A retired conductor showed him the room where Charles’s desk stood.
Thomas asked whether they hated him because he was a Mercer.
The conductor shook his head.
