The Watch in the Toy Chest

Chapter 03 - The Watch in the Toy Chest
Thomas told the judge about his father’s final visit.
The night before Daniel died, he entered the nursery after midnight and gave Thomas a gold pocket watch.
“If anything happens to me,” Daniel said, “find Rose. Open the back with her wedding ring.”
Thomas hid the watch inside a wooden toy train.
After the funeral, Charles ordered staff to empty the nursery.
Rose rescued the toy train before it was burned with other “unnecessary childhood objects.”
The watch remained inside.
Police recovered it from the service tunnel after the fire.
Rose’s wedding ring fit a narrow notch in the watch casing.
The back opened.
Inside was a miniature recording reel.
Court technicians transferred the audio.
Daniel’s voice filled the courtroom.
“My name is Daniel Mercer. Rose Bennett is my lawful wife. Thomas Bennett Mercer is our biological son.”
Rose lowered her head.
Daniel described Charles’s scheme: forged hospital records, purchased witnesses, and a false adoption linking Thomas to Evelyn.
Evelyn knew the truth.
She agreed to pose as Thomas’s mother because her family needed Mercer money after a banking collapse.
Years later, she regretted it.
She and Daniel planned to correct the records and leave the company.
Their car brakes failed the next morning.
The official investigation called it mechanical wear.
Daniel’s recording ended with a final warning:
“If Charles seeks custody, it is not because he loves my son. Thomas’s trust becomes voting control over Mercer Rail when he turns eighteen. Whoever controls the child controls the company.”
Charles stood.
“This recording is fabricated.”
The judge ordered him to sit.
A court technician examined the reel.
The material and voice pattern were consistent with Daniel’s records.
Charles requested a private competency hearing for Thomas.
The judge denied it.
