The Man Who Inspected the Brakes

Chapter 06 - The Man Who Inspected the Brakes

The mechanic who inspected Daniel’s car was named Walter Crane.

He signed a report stating the brake line failed from corrosion.

Walter disappeared six months later.

Police traced his pension payments to a coastal town under another name.

Rose, Detective Lena Ortiz, and a state investigator found him living above a closed repair shop.

Walter admitted the report was false.

The brake line had been cut cleanly.

Charles’s security chief threatened Walter’s daughter and paid him to sign the corrosion finding.

“Did Charles order it?” Lena asked.

“I never heard him say the words.”

“Who paid you?”

“Mercer Rail security.”

“Who controlled that account?”

Walter looked down.

“Charles.”

He gave them the original photographs.

The cut was unmistakable.

Walter also had a recording of Charles’s security chief saying:

“The old man wants the son frightened before the board vote.”

Charles may have intended intimidation rather than death.

But the cut brake line killed Daniel and Evelyn.

The security chief, Paul Drake, had vanished after the crash.

A bank transfer placed him in Canada.

Before investigators could reach him, Paul contacted Rose.

He offered to testify in exchange for immunity.

The meeting location was the abandoned Saint Luke’s Chapel.

The place where Rose married Daniel.

She knew it could be a trap.

She went anyway—with police watching from outside.

Paul never arrived.

Inside the chapel, Rose found fresh blood near the altar and a broken Mercer Rail cufflink.

Someone had reached him first.
