Helen Ward’s Reason

Chapter 09 - Helen Ward’s Reason

Helen surrendered at Saint Luke’s cemetery.

She carried a box of legal files and stood beside Margaret Mercer’s grave.

“I started the nursery fire,” she admitted.

Rose’s anger became physical.

“Thomas was inside.”

“I locked the door before I knew he had returned from the library.”

Helen claimed the fire was meant to destroy Daniel’s remaining records, not harm Thomas.

When she heard him crying, she panicked.

Rose reached the room first through the service tunnel.

Helen fled.

“Why protect Charles?” Lena asked.

“I wasn’t protecting Charles.”

Helen was Richard Mercer’s daughter.

Charles knew but kept the relationship secret to avoid scandal. Richard placed Helen inside the estate years earlier as his eyes and hands.

She copied trust documents, forged signatures, and moved evidence.

The nursery fire was Richard’s final instruction before arrest.

Helen provided the complete pension ledger.

She also revealed that Charles knew about her parentage and used it to keep her obedient.

Everyone in the Mercer family seemed to possess a hidden relationship converted into leverage.

Helen faced criminal charges.

She did not request forgiveness.

She testified publicly.

The pension ledger showed two hundred million dollars missing from employee accounts.

Thomas’s trust held shares purchased partly with that money.

Even the boy’s inheritance was contaminated.

Rose asked the court to freeze it.

Charles’s attorney objected.

“You would impoverish your own child?”

Rose replied, “Money stolen from other families is not security for mine.”
