The Blue Room

Chapter 05 - The Blue Room
The Blue Room stood behind a paneled wall in the Mercer estate.
Investigators entered wearing protective masks.
There was no asbestos.
The room contained filing cabinets, hospital ledgers, family correspondence, and a cradle covered by a white sheet.
Rose recognized the cradle.
She had selected it while pregnant.
Inside one cabinet, police found Thomas’s original birth certificate.
Mother: Rose Bennett Mercer.
Father: Daniel Alexander Mercer.
A second document showed a legal marriage performed at Saint Luke’s Chapel.
The records were signed by Reverend James Bell.
Charles’s attorneys immediately claimed forgery.
Then investigators found a film reel.
It showed Daniel and Rose leaving the chapel beneath falling snow. Margaret Mercer stood beside them smiling.
Charles appeared at the edge of the frame.
He had attended the wedding.
He had known from the beginning.
Thomas watched the film from the judge’s private chambers.
He had never seen his parents young or happy.
Rose stood behind him.
“Were you happy then?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Your grandfather decided happiness was dangerous if he could not control it.”
The Blue Room also contained letters from Evelyn.
One was addressed to Thomas.
She admitted she was not his biological mother and apologized for accepting the role.
“I loved you,” she wrote. “But love does not make a lie harmless.”
Her final letter said she and Daniel discovered Charles had moved employee pension money into private railway-development accounts.
They planned to expose him.
The car crash occurred before the board meeting.

The custody case was no longer only about Thomas’s birth.
It was about a company built on stolen money and two deaths disguised as an accident.
