The county issued Thomas a corrected birth certificate.
Thomas Bennett Mercer.
Mother: Rose Bennett Mercer.
Father: Daniel Alexander Mercer.
The clerk offered to remove Bennett from the child’s name.
Thomas refused.
“It was there before Grandpa erased it.”
Rose asked whether he wanted Mercer removed.
He thought for a long time.
“No. I want both. One reminds me what they did. One reminds me who found me.”
They framed no certificate.
It went into a secure folder with copies stored independently.
