The Boy Who Called Him Dad

Chapter 01 - The Boy Who Called Him Dad

Rain glazed the parking lot of the Grand Meridian Hotel like black glass.

Three armored SUVs stopped beneath the blue lights of the entrance canopy. Men in dark suits stepped out first, scanning the hotel doors, the garage ramps, and every parked car.

Then Adrian Vale emerged.

At forty-two, Adrian controlled twelve hotels, two shipping companies, and a criminal organization newspapers called the Vale Syndicate. He wore a midnight-blue suit without a tie. His face carried the calm of a man who had survived too many betrayals to show surprise.

Across the lot, Sofia Bennett held the hand of a seven-year-old boy.

She had spent six hours waiting beneath the hotel awning, refusing offers from staff to come inside. Her coat was soaked at the shoulders. Fear kept pulling her eyes toward the street.

The boy saw Adrian before she could stop him.

He slipped from her hand and ran.

“Leo!”

Adrian’s bodyguards moved instantly.

The child did not slow.

He crossed the wet pavement, stopped several feet from Adrian, and looked up with wide gray eyes.

“Dad?”

Every man in the parking lot froze.

Adrian stared at the boy.

The shape of Leo’s eyes belonged to Sofia. The small cleft in his chin belonged to Adrian’s late mother. Around the child’s neck hung a silver Saint Christopher medal Adrian had given Sofia eight years earlier.

Adrian dropped to one knee.

“What did you call me?”

Leo reached into his hoodie and removed a folded photograph. It showed a younger Adrian holding Sofia beside a lake.

“Mom said this was my father.”

Adrian looked past him.

Sofia stood beneath the hotel lights, crying silently.

He had been told she died in a warehouse fire seven years earlier.

He had identified her necklace among the ashes.

He had buried an empty coffin because no body remained.

Adrian opened his arms.

Leo stepped into them.

The man feared across three states held the child as though one wrong breath might make him disappear.

Behind Adrian, his oldest adviser, Victor Moretti, slowly reached for his phone.

Sofia saw the movement.

“Adrian,” she said. “We cannot stay here.”

He looked at her over Leo’s shoulder.

“Who are you running from?”

Sofia’s eyes moved to Victor.

“The same man who told you I was dead.”

Victor stopped dialing.

The hotel cameras turned toward the parking lot at once.

Someone inside the Grand Meridian had been waiting for Sofia to return.
