The Mausoleum Ledger
Chapter 08 - The Mausoleum Ledger
The Vale mausoleum stood on a hill above the city.
Adrian had avoided it since his father’s funeral.
Inside, marble names covered the walls. Some belonged to relatives. Others belonged to people Salvatore considered family despite sharing no blood.
A hidden compartment behind Salvatore’s plaque contained bond certificates, passports, and a final ledger.
Victor had arrived first.
The compartment was empty.
Fresh tire tracks led toward the old airport road.
Marcus found a torn envelope bearing the symbol of Cross Maritime, one of Anthony Carter’s companies.
Sofia understood.
Victor was not fleeing alone.
Daniel Cross had the aircraft and international contacts.
Cross had pretended to work for federal protection while secretly operating his family’s shipping network.
Anthony Carter might not have disappeared because Victor killed him.
He might have created the identity Daniel Cross.
Maria confirmed the possibility.
Anthony’s full name was Daniel Anthony Carter.
Sofia’s father had been her federal handler.
The man who controlled her safe houses, watched her child, and threatened her return was the father she believed dead.
Sofia sat on the mausoleum steps.
Adrian did not offer an excuse for him.
He only sat beside her.
The DNA results arrived.
Adrian was Leo’s biological father with near certainty.
The report answered one question while opening another.
Leo looked at the mausoleum walls.
“Does this mean all these people are my family?”
Adrian shook his head.
“It means some share your blood. Family is what they choose after that.”
Sofia looked toward the airport road.

Her father had made his choice.
Now they had to stop him before he took Victor and the stolen money beyond reach.
