Adrian Comes Home

Chapter 18 - Adrian Comes Home
Adrian served six years after receiving credit for cooperation and education work.
Sofia and Leo waited outside the federal facility.
No SUVs.
No bodyguards.
One used sedan.
Adrian stepped through the gate carrying a cardboard box.
Leo was thirteen and nearly as tall as Sofia.
For a moment, Adrian looked uncertain.
Then Leo walked forward.
“Dad.”
Adrian did not fall to his knees this time.
He asked, “May I hug you?”
Leo nodded.
They held each other.
Sofia watched the difference between reunion and return.
Reunion was emotion.
Return required living through ordinary days afterward.
Adrian rented an apartment rather than moving in with them.
He found work advising businesses on compliance under court supervision.
Some employers refused to hire him.
He accepted that reputation had consequences even after a sentence ended.
He attended Leo’s school events without security.
He learned grocery prices.
He discovered that Sofia snored lightly when exhausted.
She denied it.

Their love did not resume where it stopped.
It started again among damaged people who knew names could not replace trust.
