The Confession of Daniel Cross

Chapter 11 - The Confession of Daniel Cross

Daniel Cross agreed to cooperate after learning Victor had failed.

He confessed that he was Anthony Carter, Sofia’s father.

Twenty years earlier, Victor staged an attack that allowed Anthony to disappear and rebuild himself as a federal informant. Anthony promised to expose the organization from within.

Instead, access became power.

He controlled investigations, witnesses, and confiscated money.

Every year made confession more dangerous.

When Sofia discovered the ledgers, Anthony chose to hide her rather than reveal himself.

He told himself she was safer under his control.

Sofia met him in a federal interview room.

He looked older without the authority of a suit.

“Did you love me?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“That did not stop you.”

“No.”

“Did you love Leo?”

“I never allowed myself to meet him.”

“You watched him for seven years.”

Cross lowered his eyes.

Observation was not relationship.

Protection was not presence.

He provided account keys, names, and records linking officials to Victor.

His cooperation would reduce his sentence, not erase it.

Sofia left without hugging him.

Outside, Adrian waited.

He did not ask whether she forgave her father.

He asked whether she had eaten.

The ordinary question broke something open in her.

For years, every man around her had discussed her safety, evidence, value, or danger.

Adrian asked about hunger.

She said no.

They ate sandwiches from a vending machine beside the courthouse elevators.
